Welcome to Recovering Fundamentalists. This site is designed to provide information and support to people who are questioning religious dogma and recovering from the negative effects of indoctrination.
Right now millions of people, perhaps you included, are moving away from authoritarian religious systems, such as Christian Fundamentalism, and forming their own worldviews. On this website, you’ll find many personal stories of these experiences. You are not alone.
This site has two branches that we call Discovery and Recovery. The Discovery branch provides information, thoughtful essays, science, news, important ideas and provocative points of view. We believe that increased awareness and thoughtful dialogue are essential to overcoming the obstacles imposed by religious conditioning.
The Recovery branch of our site includes resources for facing these obstacles and taking steps toward healing and growth. It’s not unusual for people to be confused, angry, fearful, and hurt. The good news is that many people have overcome these issues and gone on to live fulfilling lives, finding greater peace and joy in world-views of their own choosing.
We’ve designed this site to be interactive and user-friendly. In addition to original content, we also have lists of recommended books, upcoming events, and other resources. Recovering Fundamentalists is also connected with social media so you can continue the conversation within your own social network.
Our aim is not to provide you with a new world-view. We believe that the healthiest approach is for each individual to make their own, informed choice. If you’ve been a part of an authoritarian organization, you may not have been given the chance to do so.
We’ve been there, and we’re here to support you in taking charge of your own spirituality. People choose different paths; that may change over time. Regardless of your choice, our primary concern is to assist you in making it with a clear mind, free of manipulation.
You need to be true to yourself above all. Your thoughts, your feelings, your intuitions, are to be respected. You have a right to know everything about the world, not just the tiny universe of one religious view. Since you’ve already found the courage to start your journey, we hope you feel empowered to make use of the resources here. We offer you a taste of the richness of human knowledge and some guidance toward a healthy recovery.
Wikipedia says, ”Fundamentalism refers to a belief in a strict adherence to a set of basic principles (often religious in nature), sometimes as a reaction to perceived doctrinal compromises with modern social and political life.”
The a fore mentioned “adherence” can be a very difficult bond to break. Many recovering fundamentalists recognize that this adherence can present many obstacles when reconciling a blossoming recognition of truth versus a lifetime of dogmatic education. We are here to provide resources for overcoming these obstacles.
We are here to encourage conversation and present the pieces of information that we have found useful in our own lives. We believe that clarity can be found through conversation amongst mutually respected parties of varying backgrounds.
The founders of recoveringfundamentalists.com all grew up in conservative Christian homes in the Midwest. At this stage, most of our content is based on fundamental Christianity for this reason. We will be diversifying our content in the near future by partnering with authors of various backgrounds.
