“I would never try to re-define marriage.” We’re constantly in a state of re-defining. That’s what societies do. Throughout history – there are countless times where culture has gone a certain way for so long that sometimes they even forget WHY they do certain things – they just know they do it “that way”. Then we find that doesn’t work anymore and we adjust. Recently we decided as a country that religion and state should be seperate, that slavery was unacceptable, that gender predjudice was unacceptable, racial predjudice was unacceptable and today, sexual predjudice is being challenged as unacceptable.
I still view myself as a Christian, because we align ourselves with someone or something we believe in. I believe in the freedom of speech, to bear arms and of religion, among other things…I am an American. I believe in loving God with all my heart, soul and strength – which I believe translates to obedience – which I believe translates to treating others how I wish to be treated – which I believe is kinda what was at the heart of Jesus’s message – so I am a Christian. Maybe you’d just call me a “morally good person”. Which is fine, I guess. But if you’d have to put a face on that – religious or not – you have to admit – Jesus was kinda the poster guy for that.
But if Kirk is telling me that a Christian is someone who follows the writings of human men catitonically writing in some trance, with all their own beliefs and opinions in that day in age in their writing, and take that poem in Genesis as a word for word ver batim account of God Almighty, not to ever be perceived as anything different – well, guess I’m goin’ straight to hell!
I think Kirk Cameron said this beautifully. He did not sound offensive. Let’s keep in mind that Piers ASKED him a question, so considering an answer typically follows a question, Kirk answered the question. Kirk Cameron used an example from the foundation of both Christianity AND Judaism. Jewish people take the first five books of the bible, what they call the Torah, VERY seriously. Are Jews to be discounted and discredited for their beliefs also because they don’t grow with society? Let’s not forget that Christianity is directly related and essentially a continuation of Judaism. Most Jewish people who also practice their Jewish faith would not say that their religion is in a constant state of redefining. Therefore, Christianity, being a continuation of Judaism, should also hold the same values. Jesus was Jewish. Most of the New Testament was written by Jews. Christianity IS Jewish.
To compare gay rights to civil rights and slavery is absurd. Gay rights is about what they do. Civil rights was about who they are. Black people should be incredibly insulted by any comparison. Homosexuality is a behavior, NOT an identity. There are NO replicated studies showing that homosexuality is genetic, hormonal, biological, or evolutionary.
Perhaps this is why you are having trouble accepting and supporting them. For YOU it is about what they DO (which does not affect your life and personal choices at all), but for them this is about being fully accepted by society for who they ARE.
